Many employees and volunteers who undertake ‘child related work’ must apply for and maintain a Working with Children check. The Victorian Working With Children Act 2005 defines ‘child related work’ as work involving regular, direct contact with a child or children.  The check is required if the organisation falls into one of 22 categories and the worker is not otherwise exempt (eg. an exemption applies to workers under 18 years of age).

The Working With Children Check focuses on scanning for specific offences that may impact on the safety of children and is ‘ongoing’, meaning that the applicant’s criminal record is monitored throughout the life of the Working With Children Check. The Working With Children Check also includes a check of records held by certain professional disciplinary bodies beyond law enforcement agencies.
